We began following Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum’s MOSAIC program in January of last year. MOSAIC is a free after-school arts program for high school youth led by Studio Manager and renowned Artist, Alex Rubio. The crew had started working on what would become the largest handmade tile mosaic mural in San Antonio. They invited us into their studio at Blue Star and we began documenting their process.
Each student artist has the opportunity to learn all the steps in creating a mosaic tile mural. From coming up with a concept of featuring San Antonio’s Eastside landmarks to installing the handmade tiles on H-E-B’s wall, the students can all say they had a hand in making the completed mural possible.
The unveiling of the mural at H-E-B was an exciting event. There was a great turnout of supporters and members of the Eastside community. All the time and effort Alex and the student artists put into the project culminated into a single moment when the cover was lifted and everyone could see what they had created.
The mural features well-known Eastside landmarks, including the Cameo Theater, Carver Community Cultural Center, Watson Fine Arts Center, Carver Academy and the Ella Austin Community Center. Visit the completed mosaic tile mural at the East Houston Street H-E-B located at 415 North New Braunfels Avenue.
The film features other collaborative projects including a steam roller print portrait of the late artist Chuck Ramirez and an outdoor fence piece with artist Gary Sweeney for his Retrospective exhibition at Blue Star. It was important for us to show the diverse range of projects MOSAIC student artists have the opportunity to work on as part of the program.
Thank you to Alex, the student artists, Blue Star, and all the people who made this project possible!
